Toe Deformities

Hammertoes, clawed toes and mallet toes are deformities of the toes due to the abnormal position of the bones at the joints between the bones.

The cause is due to a shortening and tightening of the muscles and tendon in the foot that attach to the shoes. This may be due to a number of things such as: wearing inappropriate footwear that is too narrow and tight for your feet, arthritis, a family history, high arched feet, trauma and fractures bones, poor biomechanics, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes which can lead to weakness of muscles in the foot, neurological conditions and bunions.

If you are suffering from one of these toe deformities you may notice redness and inflammation of the toes, corns and calluses developing on your toes, pain, stiff rigid toes, bent toes and difficulty finding appropriate fitting footwear.

At Mint Foot Care, we diagnose this condition by taking a comprehensive history, performing a biomechanical assessment and video gait analysis. The podiatrist may prescribe diagnostic imaging such as X-rays.
