Ingrown Toe Nails

Walking on Tiptoes

Onychocryptosis, also known as ingrown toenail is a condition in which a spike or serrated edge of nail has pierced the superficial layer of skin of the sulcus and penetrated the dermal tissues. This leads to acute inflammation in the surrounding soft tissues which often becomes infected and is very painful.

The most common cause of ingrown toenails are faulty nail cutting, trauma, involuted nails, excessive sweating of the skin and pressure from ill-fitting footwear. It commonly affects the big toe and adolescent males.

At Mint Foot Care, we will examine the ingrown toenail and recommend conservative treatment or surgery. Surgery may be required when an ingrown toenail is recurrent, infected, and continually painful, the patient is unable to wear shoes or the condition inhibits work, sporting or other activities.

Our podiatrist can also examine your footwear and walking pattern as this could be a contributing factor to your recurring ingrown toenails. Appropriate footwear and custom orthotics may be recommended. Our podiatrist can also give advice on correct nail cutting as well as perform general nail care/medical pedicures.
